Environmental Protection Act 1990
This Act provides among many other things control of pollution arising from certain industrial and other processes and the collection and disposal of waste. It is the foundation for the regulation of recycling in this country.
The End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations 2003 and The End-of-Life Vehicles (Producer Responsibility) Regulations 2005
These are the regulations that deal with the implementation of the European Directive on End of Life Vehicles so far. They cover the permitting of Authorised Treatment Facilities and the Producer's obligation to establish and submit for approval details of their system for collection of vehicles for free take back. In addition they lay down the recycling rates that must be achieved by all treatment facilities.
Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001 and The Motor Salvage Operators Regulations 2002
This act and subsequent regulations introduce powers to regulate the motor salvage industry. They require motor salvage operators to register with their local authorities and to keep records of vehicles handled with details of suppliers and recipients. They also allow the police to have right of entry to registered premises without warrant.
